Q: "What do I need in order to begin driving instruction?"
A: You must be at least 16 years old and have a valid New York State learner's permit. You must apply for a permit at your local New York State Department of Motor Vehicles' office. You will need to complete an application and bring proof of identity, birth certificate (or the equivalent) and Social Security card to the DMV, where you will be given a written test and a vision test. You do not need to make an appointment. Please visit the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles website for details, locations, hours, and online practice tests. http://www.dmv.ny.gov/index.htm
Q: "Once I have my permit, what do I need to do to obtain my license?"
A: Most new drivers who fail their road tests were not adequately prepared. The DMV recommends that all learners have a minimum of 50 hours of supervised practice driving before they take their road tests, with at least 15 hours at night (after sunset). It is also recommended that at least 10 hours of supervised practice driving be in moderate to heavy traffic.
You will need to bring your original certificate from the 5-hour class (MV-278) or original issued certificate of completion from an authorized driver's ed course (MV-285) along with your permit to your road test.
Q: "What if I am already a good driver?"
A: It is always possible to become a better driver. We teach students at every skill level and offer advanced lessons for licensed drivers. If you do not yet have your license, your first lesson will determine how much instruction you need in order to pass the road test and function as a safe and responsible driver. We also can give you a simulated road test that replicates the road-test situation.
Q: "What if I am terrified to get behind the wheel?"
A: The Attila School of Driving specializes in helping clients overcome driving phobias and manage their anxiety behind the wheel. Your lessons will proceed at a rate that is comfortable for you. Our packages are good for six months.
Q: "What if I am worried that I won't pass the road test?"
A: The Attila School of Driving will not set up a road test for you until it is determined that you have acquired the necessary skills and experience.
Q: "Where do the lessons take place?"
A: The Attila School of Driving can arrange to pick you up at (and bring you back to) your home, school, or office (only if in Manhattan) or you can meet us at our office on East 87th and Second Avenue. Your lessons will begin with the basics of driving on the side street of Manhattan and gradually progress into main roadways surrounding city.
Q: "Am I too old to learn how to drive?"
A: Never. Our students range in age from 16 to 84, some are driving for the first time while others are learning again after many years.
Q: "Why should I get a license? After all, there are a lot of non-drivers in New York City and we've got great public transportation."
A: The ability to drive is a mark of a responsible adult and a great freedom. There is absolutely no reason not to get your license if you are of able mind and body. We will take the hassle out of it and leave you with a new, enjoyable skill. What do you have to lose?
